The market in brief

Ghana eats more pork than it produces, and imports fill the gap. A USDA GAIN report cited by Food Business Africa in February 2023 estimated pork imports at about 15,000 t in 2021, worth about USD 16 million, with the value rising steadily since 2017 and the EU dominating the market. The same article cites a report that domestic pork production has grown 10.5% a year over the last 15 years in both commercial and free-range systems, while demand exceeds domestic production by about 20% (Food Business Africa, 3 February 2023).

Producers named high taxation, limited extension services and high feed prices as obstacles. In early 2023 Ghana accepted a US pork export certificate, and the president of the Pig Farmers Association of Ghana called the decision a threat to local producers. The article refers to a recent disease outbreak that led businesses to cull hundreds of animals; reports also describe ASF outbreaks in 2023 in the Ashanti and Eastern regions (we read a summary of that reporting).

What this means for a project:

  • Imports show demand, but also competition. Plan on your own costs and a named buyer, and test the plan with lower prices.
  • Feed is a major cost. See do you need an on-farm feed mill and what drives the cost of a pig farm.
  • ASF recurs. Layout and entry control belong in the first drawing: ASF biosecurity for pig farms.

Heat control is the main design task: insulated roofs, ventilation stages, cooling for sows and a controller. See heat stress in pigs and pig house ventilation design. Plan standby power and alarms too: backup power for pig houses.

Rules and who to ask

Permits, veterinary requirements and import rules are set by national, regional and district authorities and change. Ask the Veterinary Services Directorate, the regional and district agriculture and planning offices, and your clearing agent about imported equipment (see importing pig farm equipment from China).

We are ready to work with you on a project in line with the requirements of the country where it will be built. The documents and conditions are agreed with our specialists through the live chat on this site or at sales@hnyzgroup.com.

How we approach a project here

  1. Your data: sows or pig places, site, water, power, buyer and timeline.
  2. Layout: flows of pigs, feed, people and manure with biosecurity zoning.
  3. Climate and power design: ventilation, cooling, generator and alarms.
  4. Equipment, installation, training: by stage with a written scope.
  5. Documents: confirmed for your country before quotation.
