The market in brief
Malawi’s pig sector is mostly smallholder and free-range, and no source we read gives a dependable national count.

The ranges are wide, and the FAO-based figure looks high next to the others. We therefore build no calculation on them. A farm should be sized on a named buyer, not on a national total.

Animal health
Pig333 reported in July 2026 that Neno District suspended pig sales for two weeks in areas under Sub-Traditional Authority Chikalema after a pig carcass condemned at the district slaughterhouse was suspected of carrying ASF. Farmers and traders were asked to report pigs with unusual illness or sudden death, and the suspension may be extended (Pig333, July 2026). The page shows two different dates (9 and 17 July 2026). The case was suspected; we did not find a confirmation.

Rules and who to ask
Permits, veterinary registration, movement rules and import requirements are set by national and district authorities and change, and local sales restrictions can appear at short notice.
