The market in brief

Mozambique’s pigs are mostly kept by small family farms, and ASF is a long-standing constraint. A Pig333 article by A. Olasupo (31 March 2025), quoting FAO figures, lists 2.32 million pigs and 136,637 t of pigmeat for Mozambique (Pig333, March 2025); the captions do not make the reference year clear.

Indicator Value Source
Pig population 2.32 million FAO figure in a Pig333 article (March 2025)
Pigmeat production 136,637 t same
Pig population, 2003 census 1.3 million Mozambican study (we read a summary)
Pig population, 2019 1,635,049 FAO-sourced regional table (summary)
Share of production on small family farms more than 90% ASF review (we read a summary)

The figures do not match, so we show them side by side. The review we read in summary says the commercial sector is small and that the 2010 agricultural census found most pigs in the centre-north, where commercial pig farming is infrequent.

What this means for a project:

  • A commercial farm is a niche, so confirm your buyer first. See how to start a commercial pig farm.
  • Biosecurity is the main design theme. Put it in the layout: ASF biosecurity for pig farms and pig farm layout and site selection.
  • Supply chain matters. Feed, genetics and spare parts may come through long routes; plan stock and training.

Hot spells need cooling and ventilation, and cool winter nights need heat for piglets; see heat stress in pigs and piglet heating.

Rules and who to ask

Permits, veterinary registration and import requirements are set by national and local authorities and change. Ask the ministry responsible for agriculture and its veterinary services, the provincial and district offices, and your clearing agent about imported equipment; our guide to importing pig farm equipment from China lists the usual documents.

We are ready to work with you on a project in line with the requirements of the country where it will be built. The documents and conditions are agreed with our specialists through the live chat on this site or at sales@hnyzgroup.com.

How we approach a project here

  1. Your data: sows or pig places, site, water, power, buyer and timeline.
  2. Layout: flows of pigs, feed, people and manure with biosecurity zoning.
  3. Climate and power design: cooling, ventilation, warmth for piglets.
  4. Equipment, installation, training: by stage with a written scope.
  5. Documents: confirmed for your country before quotation.
