The market in brief

Zimbabwe’s government has put numbers on growth: more sows, more pork and cheaper local feed. According to a Herald report republished by Pig333 in June 2026, the 2026–2030 national strategy projects pork production rising from 25,000 t in 2025/26 to 36,000 t in 2030/31 and the sow population from 153,773 to 256,406 (Pig333, June 2026).

Indicator Value Source
Pork production 25,000 t (2025/26) → 36,000 t (2030/31, target) Agriculture Food Systems and Rural Transformation Strategy 2026–2030
Sow population 153,773 → 256,406 (target) same
Pig value chain US$85 million → US$104 million (target) same
Commercial slaughter, registered abattoirs 264,952 animals, +9.6% (2025/26) CLAFA 2 assessment
Pig feed production 95,119 t, +13% (2025) reported in the same article
Feed share of production cost 60–70% article, no source named

The strategy’s priorities are quality genetics through multiplication and artificial-insemination centres, smallholder finance, affordable feed, biosecurity and disease surveillance, and lower abattoir compliance costs. A genetics programme launched in 2025 imported over 700 gilts and boars for more than 100 farmers; the chairperson of the “PAC” (the report does not spell it out) reports pigs sold per sow per year up from 20 to 30 and slaughter age down from 183 to 137 days. These are reported claims and we have not seen audited results.

What this means for a project:

  • Targets are not orders. Build the plan on your own buyer and costs; see how to start a commercial pig farm.
  • Feed decides the result. Compare buying with milling: do you need an on-farm feed mill and pig feed mill process flow.
  • Genetics and layout go together. Better pigs need the right house, feeding and heat; see what drives the cost of a pig farm.

Cool nights call for local heat for piglets and draught-free houses; see piglet heating and pig house ventilation design. Lower, hotter areas need cooling; we calculate for your site.

Rules and who to ask

Permits, veterinary registration, abattoir rules and import requirements are set by national and local authorities and change. Ask the ministry responsible for agriculture and its veterinary services, the Pig Industry Board, the local authority’s planning and environmental offices, and your clearing agent about imported equipment; our guide to importing pig farm equipment from China lists the usual documents.

We are ready to work with you on a project in line with the requirements of the country where it will be built. The documents and conditions are agreed with our specialists through the live chat on this site or at sales@hnyzgroup.com.

How we approach a project here

  1. Your data: sows or pig places, site, water, power, buyer and timeline.
  2. Layout: flows of pigs, feed, people and manure with biosecurity zoning.
  3. Climate and power design: warmth for piglets, cooling, standby power.
  4. Equipment, installation, training: by stage with a written scope.
  5. Documents: confirmed for your country before quotation.
