The market in brief

South Africa has one of the more organised pig industries in Africa, and it is dealing with animal-disease pressure. At the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) 2026 annual meeting, reported by Farmer’s Weekly and republished by Pig333 in September 2026, the industry described the largest ASF outbreak it has recorded, which began in November 2025, and its first foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) detection in a commercial piggery, followed by 17 more FMD incidents in commercial units (Pig333, September 2026).

Indicator Value Source
ASF largest recorded outbreak, from November 2025 SAPPO 2026 meeting
FMD in commercial units first detection, then 17 further incidents same
FMD vaccine doses recorded about 200,000 same
Pig movement logging about 60% in late 2025 same
Units audited by the quality scheme, 2025 154, covering 61% of the registered commercial sow herd same
Pig population / pigmeat 1.32 million head; 351,560 t FAO figures in a Pig333 article (March 2025); the captions do not make the reference year clear

Imports of pork increased from early 2026 after disease disruptions and price uncertainty, but the report gives no import volumes. The same report notes that only 9% of South African households buy whole fresh pork, against 67% that buy polony, which shows how much of the market is processed products.

What this means for a project:

  • Biosecurity is the first design topic. With ASF and FMD both active, entry control, vehicle washing and zoning belong in the first drawing: ASF biosecurity for pig farms and vehicle wash and disinfection station design.
  • Traceability is expected. Plan for movement records and vaccination records from the first day.
  • Welfare rules are moving. SAPPO plans a programme to track the move away from gestation crates; read sow stalls or group housing before you choose the sow house.

Frost and cold nights make farrowing-house heating and tight, insulated buildings important; see piglet heating and pig house ventilation design. Summer days still need cooling; see heat stress in pigs. Power cuts are a design topic too: backup power for pig houses.

Rules and who to ask

Veterinary controls, movement permits, environmental approval and import rules are set by national and provincial authorities and are changing with the outbreaks. Ask the national animal-health authority and the provincial veterinary services, your municipal planning and environment offices, SAPPO, and your clearing agent about imported equipment; our guide to importing pig farm equipment from China lists the usual documents.

We are ready to work with you on a project in line with the requirements of the country where it will be built. The documents and conditions are agreed with our specialists through the live chat on this site or at sales@hnyzgroup.com.

How we approach a project here

  1. Your data: sows or pig places, site, water, power, buyer and timeline.
  2. Layout: flows of pigs, feed, people and manure with biosecurity zoning.
  3. Climate design: insulation and heating for winter, cooling for summer, standby power.
  4. Equipment, installation, training: by stage with a written scope.
  5. Documents: confirmed for your country before quotation.
