The market in brief
Indonesia’s pork production is large in total but concentrated in a few provinces. The 2021 Livestock and Animal Health Statistics, presented by Katadata in May 2022, give a national pig population of 8.01 million and pork production of 323,670 t in 2021 (Katadata, 15 May 2022).

Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, and the table shows that pork production sits in provinces where pork is part of local diets. We treat Indonesia as a set of regional markets; market size in a given province needs local checking before a project is sized. We found no newer national statistics than 2021 and no reliable current figures for sows or farm numbers, so we do not state them.

Animal health
Beef Central reported in November 2019 that ASF had been confirmed on several pig sites near Medan, North Sumatra, with up to 4,000 pigs dead; monitoring posts were set up in 38 districts (Beef Central, 8 November 2019). Rules and who to ask
Farm permits, environmental approval, veterinary rules and import rules are set by national, provincial and district authorities and change.
