The market in brief

Vietnam is one of the world’s large pork markets, and it is changing from small household farms to commercial farms. A June 2026 review of Vietnamese pig production by Hien T. Le and Toan T. Nguyen, published on Pig333, reports about 5.4 million t of live pork in 2025, up 5% on 2024, and nearly 64% of livestock product consumption is pork (Pig333, 12 June 2026).

The review adds that small-scale farming has been shrinking by about 5–7% a year, foreign companies hold about 43% of the market, and high set-up costs for farrow-to-finish farms are a barrier for small producers. Live-pig prices below about 50,000 dong per kg were described as a major problem for producers in June 2026.

What this means for a project:

ASF in Vietnam

According to the same review, ASF reached Vietnam in February 2019 and nearly 6 million pigs died or were culled in the first phase. Reported outbreaks were 8,517 in 2019, 1,808 in 2020, 3,211 in 2021, 1,407 in 2022, 952 in 2023 and 1,669 in 2024: a total of 17,564 outbreaks and 6,591,358 pigs. From January to September 2025 there were 1,780 outbreaks across all 34 provinces and more than 650,000 pigs were culled. Most cases occurred on smallholder farms, and recombinant genotype I/II viruses were detected in 2023.

In the south the design question is heat and humidity all year; in the north it is a hot summer plus a cool winter that calls for heat for piglets and controlled minimum ventilation. See heat stress in pigs and pig house ventilation design.

Rules and who to ask

Farm permits, veterinary conditions and import rules are set by national and provincial authorities and change. Ask the animal health authority, the provincial agriculture office and the local planning and environment offices before design, and your customs broker about imported equipment (see importing pig farm equipment from China).
