The market in brief

Kenya’s pig sector is small, and its pork supply is below demand. At the National Stakeholders’ Sensitisation Forum for the Pig Value Chain in April 2026, the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development gave the pig population as an estimated 981,182, pork production as 23,000 t a year and demand as 38,500 t, and said that per-capita pork consumption is about 0.4 kg (Pig333, April 2026).

Measures planned by the government include better breeding stock and affordable feed, stronger extension and producer organisations, contract farming and better links between producers and processors, more processing and cold-chain capacity, and stronger food-safety, inspection and traceability systems. The constraints it lists are low productivity from poor genetics, high feed costs, limited extension, weak biosecurity, informal markets and recurring ASF.

What this means for a project:

  • A supply gap exists, but most producers are small and informal markets dominate. A commercial farm needs a named buyer or processor from the start; see how to start a commercial pig farm.
  • Start at a size you can manage and plan the whole site; see how many sows to start with.
  • Feed cost decides the result. Build the plan on your own prices; see the business plan checklist.
  • ASF is recurring. Put biosecurity in the layout: ASF biosecurity for pig farms.

The central highlands are mild with cool nights, so piglets need local heat and the house needs steady minimum ventilation; see piglet heating and pig house ventilation design. Hotter, lower regions need more cooling; see heat stress in pigs. We calculate for your site.

Rules and who to ask

Permits, veterinary registration, county rules and import requirements are set by national and county authorities and change. Ask the State Department for Livestock Development and its veterinary services, the county veterinary and planning offices, and your clearing agent about imported equipment; our guide to importing pig farm equipment from China lists the usual documents.

We are ready to work with you on a project in line with the requirements of the country where it will be built. The documents and conditions are agreed with our specialists through the live chat on this site or at sales@hnyzgroup.com.

How we approach a project here

  1. Your data: sows or pig places, site, water, power, buyer and timeline.
  2. Layout: flows of pigs, feed, people and manure, with biosecurity zoning.
  3. Climate design: warmth and ventilation for the highlands, cooling for hot areas.
  4. Equipment, installation, training: by stage, with a written scope.
  5. Documents: the list for your country is confirmed before quotation.
