The market in brief
Uganda has one of the largest pig populations in East Africa, and demand is growing faster than organised supply. A CGIAR document citing the Uganda Bureau of Statistics reports more than 7.2 million pigs in the 2021 national livestock census and describes Uganda as the largest pig producer in Eastern Africa. It also cites FAO projections for pork demand of 277,500 t in 2030 and 606,600 t in 2050, and says low production and supply-chain inefficiency do not meet rising domestic demand (CGIAR; we read a summary).
| Indicator | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pig population, 2021 census | more than 7.2 million | CGIAR citing UBOS |
| Pork consumption | about 3.4–3.5 kg per person per year (official/press estimates) | Monitor; FAO-indexed paper (2024) |
| Projected demand | 277,500 t (2030) to 606,600 t (2050) | FAO projection cited by CGIAR |
Reports differ in date and method, so we give ranges and name the source. Industry commentary quoted by the Daily Monitor says official statistics may understate pork consumption.
What this means for a project:
- Demand is real and growing, and much production is small-scale. A commercial farm that delivers steady quality and health status can serve processors and traders; name your buyer first.
- Disease decides survival. Read ASF biosecurity for pig farms before you choose a site, and see pig farm layout and site selection.
- Water and power need planning; see pig drinking water systems and backup power for pig houses.
- Start at a manageable size: how to start a commercial pig farm.
Climate: mild equatorial
| Place | Coolest month (mean) | Warmest month (mean) | Record low / high | Rain per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kampala | July, 20.7 °C | February, 22.5 °C | 11.5 °C / 34.4 °C | 1,204.5 mm |

Temperatures stay moderate, but nights are cool for newborn piglets, and humid rainy seasons raise moisture in the house. Plan local heat for piglets, minimum ventilation that removes moisture, and shade and cooling for the hottest days; see piglet heating and pig house ventilation design.
Rules and who to ask
Permits, veterinary requirements and import rules are set by national and district authorities and change. Ask the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, the district veterinary and planning offices, and your clearing agent about imported equipment (see importing pig farm equipment from China). Agree manure handling early; see pig manure management options.
We are ready to work with you on a project in line with the requirements of the country where it will be built. The documents and conditions are agreed with our specialists through the live chat on this site or at sales@hnyzgroup.com.
How we approach a project here
- Your data: sows or pig places, site, water, power, buyer and timeline.
- Layout: flows of pigs, feed, people and manure with biosecurity zoning.
- Climate design: local heat for piglets, ventilation and cooling for the hot spells.
- Equipment, installation, training: by stage with a written scope.
- Documents: confirmed for your country before quotation.
