The market in brief

Tanzania’s pig herd is growing from a modest base, and meat consumption per person is low. The Citizen reported on 4 September 2025 that the pig population rose 5.1% from 3.9 million in 2023/24 to 4.1 million in 2024/25, as the country prepared to host a pork conference in Dar es Salaam (The Citizen, 4 September 2025). Pig333 reported the same figure from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries at the conference of 11–13 September 2025 (Pig333, September 2025).

The Citizen article gives no pork-specific consumption or production figure, and we did not find sow numbers. A 2023 headline states that Tanzania imports 52,000 t of pork a year, attributed to the pig farmers’ association; we saw only the headline.

Animal health

The September 2025 conference reporting refers to an ongoing African swine fever outbreak and recommends biosecurity from farm to consumer and continued farmer education. An academic paper summarised in search results says the Southern Highlands hold nearly half the national herd and are hit hardest by ASF (we read a summary, not the paper). Ask the veterinary services for the current situation in your region.
